Home Weatherization program
( Weatherization Assistance Program ) is a FREE service funded by the Federal Department of Energy (DOE)
and administered by the Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS).
Homeowners and renters who qualify for the program are provided
with services such as:
• Weather-stripping
• Caulking
• Glass replacement
• Insulation of attics, walls and crawl
spaces.
• Blower Door testing for air leakage
• Combustion Appliance testing for
safety and efficiency
• Health and Safety inspection
The goal of the Home Weatherization Program is to lower energy usage
that may result in lower utility bills so that precious income can
be applied toward other living expenses. A great deal of technology
is involved with testing the homes and developing a “game plan”
under this program. An extensive energy audit is performed
on each home along with a “Blower Door Test,” which indicates the
number of air changes per hour in a given dwelling. A house
that is too tight can cause indoor air quality problems, and may
result in respiratory ailments; while a house that is not tight
enough will allow too much cold air infiltration. We examine
and test the efficiency of the heating units in a home, and also
test for the amount of carbon monoxide in the ambient air of the
home. A compilation of all of these tests then determines
what weatherization measures will be installed in a home, based
upon the savings to investment ratio. The household must also make
a commitment to reducing their energy consumption. After the Agency
determines the eligible applicants, and performs the necessary inspections,
it will then hire a qualified, licensed and insured private contractor
to complete the work.
Families and individuals who are interested in having their home
weatherized must meet current Income Guidelines, which includes
gross income of everyone residing in the home at the time of application.
Students under 18 with a wage living at home are:
Recipients of FIP, SSI or SDA who have received benefits during
